This certification is unique in that it a basic level certification and like any basic level certification it targets the beginner level candidates.

The certification is engineered to attract university students and other beginner level candidates who wish to obtain a beginner's level knowledge about UNIX with special focus towards Oracle Solaris operating system.

Associated Exam

In order to obtain this certification it is necessary the pass the test codded 1Z0-876. The duration of this exam is 90 minutes or 1 hour and 30 minutes. The number of questions in this test is 52. The minimum percentage of marks that must be secured in order to earn this certification is 50%. The test is multiple choice questions based. Each question will carry a number of options among which only one is the correct answer.

Topics covered

The vendor specified exam objectives are as mentioned below:

1. Observe and operate the basics of the Oracle Solaris system.
   Understanding of command line for logging in, once logged in learn how to change the login password. Learn how to perform basic functions using the different commands in the operating system by the help of the command line. In order to learn the various commands available in the Oracle Solaris operating system the candidates are to access the internet to locate the resource that offers the basic command information and formats.
2. Observe files and directories.
   Learn to use basic level commands in order to manipulate the files and directories. The manipulation includes the copying, renaming, moving and removing of the files and directories. The candidates should familiarize themselves with core level text editing in order to perform various processes on the computational device. Learn how to use the shell structure with focus towards the shell variables. Candidates should be able to describe the need for user initializing files. The candidates should also be equipped with the appropriate tools in order to change the access and modification privileges of a file. This includes changing the properties of a particular file which cannot be changed by any user except the administrator.
3. Explore the options in files and directories.
   This section covers the use of the system search engine in order to search for different files. The candidates should also learn to search for specific text within different text files. Another area that the candidates should have strong concepts about is the "Process" this includes all actions that are taking place in the computational machine via the operating system. The candidates should be able to describe what a process is? Once the definition is learnt the application area comes where the candidates should be familiar with process monitoring which means they should be able to observe the progress of a process, select a particular process from any array of processes and most important of all the termination of a process.
4. Shell concept.
   This section of the test includes the configuration and setting up of the shell script. The candidates should be well equipped with the tools to manage a Job efficiently using minimum system resources. The candidates should be familiar with the concept of functions and should use them in order to facilitate different process and impart a certain degree of automation to the whole operating system. The final stage this section includes is the running of the written shell scripts.
5. File Transfer and Archiving.
   This section includes basic file manipulations which include the creation of new file archives, the viewing of the file archives so that searches can be carried out in order to access the required file or the required part of that file and lastly the retrieval of different files archives from the existing archive bank. Another important area the candidates should have strong implementation knowledge of is the file compression and decompression. Compression as the name suggests is the shrinking of the data so that there is more data present for the same disk space occupied. The compression utility help conserve space. In order to access the information in a compressed file the candidates should be familiar with the decompression of file information. The candidates should be familiar with the method to view different files. A very important aspect of this section on which the candidates are tested in this test is the remote file transfer. Remote file transfer includes the transference of data from one machine to another. The candidates should be familiar with remote access and file transfer mechanism. The candidates should be able to create these transfer sessions.

This certification is valid until ORACLE releases an upgrade to it.
